Forum: GratefulDead Subject: I've missed it here, but I'm caught in the war John Barlow is fighting

Hello fellow Grateful Dead loves, it's been a long time! I used to post here a lot, and I made one post I'm still very proud of, about the post-retirement years of Playing in the Band. That post was thousands of hours of joyful listening!

Anyway, right now I'm a huge ball of nerves and stress because I've been caught up in the same internet war that John Perry Barlow has been fighting for a long time - for freedom for people to use their computers how they want, and write the software they want to use. It's kind of a long story but my own work as an amateur software developer has happened to overlap with big-business patented supercomputing technology, and now this software project I've worked hard on, and myself, are now in a complete tangle. I actually posted on a technology related web site hoping to get JPB's eyes on the issue because I think he might see "Deadhead vs IBM" about technology patents as something interesting.

Anyway, this is just a personal note to say that I have deeply missed everyone here, and as I was listening to 11/10/73 tonight (Nov - Dec 73 my all time fav 2 months) I realized that it would probably be good for my soul amidst all this stress to say hi to my old friends here at the archive. I see a lot of familiar names and that makes me happy. Sorry I disappeared, but Deadheads understand about how sometimes The Bus Comes By and you gotta get on, and you end up somewhere else.

So hi again, and just being here on this board right now is helping me de-stress.

Hey, I just filled out my first attempt at brackets! My team went from being discussed as possible number one overall seed this time last week to a has no chance to make it to the final four by all the "experts" this week. Should be a good one.

JPB should not be that hard to get ahold of...

Those Dubai escorts will do that to you. They can suck start a Harley from 500 yards on a January morning in North Dakota.........

At least the debate was polite compared to many convos around here.

Duckets is busy seeking that cozy moist and soft blumpkin – bob on a knob – cabeza – derb – get (one's) knees dirty – give Scully – Lewinski – (one's) turn in the barrel – smoke (one's) johnson – et al

Erstwhile thou stupid feckin Irish deft laddies drink heavily on thy day in thine collective attempt to swallow ye old wives tale that St Patrick actually drove thee snakes out of Ireland

I checked out your Playin post, very comprehensive...however, a couple of questions on your show list...i.e. where is 10-02-1977, no mention of the drippy 01-15-1978 (longest post retirement version)? 04-14-1982? maybe they just didn't make the list...:D

also

1) the first is that you wrote Jerry played deliberately horrendous guitar in 95...I'm not sure any of that was "deliberate". like sabotage, Rosanne Barrs national anthem?

2) you wrote that you purposely left off your favorite post retirement version...not sure why...what show is it? edit: 07-19-94, I was at this show and remember this playing well...

thanks

Thank you so much LIA. During the time since I have been here I have often rather regretted the feeling that I wasn't still part of the effort to move GD scholarship forward in some ways. I hope I can find time to catch up on your contributions for the past few years!

As for "where's my favorite version?" - I have very good answers! If you notice the post is constructed in a certain way, with each year "rationed" to just a couple versions. There were quite a few versions I wanted to mention, but were just trimmed to keep the post somewhat manageable.

Because I was focusing on the aspect of "historical change and progression" I was often looking for jams that had a combination of novelty and quality - not always the absolute best for a year, but something that you could hear in that year that you couldn't have heard in the year before.

I completely agree with your high opinion of the PITB versions you mentioned. :)

As for Jerry "deliberately bad" guitar - I meant not making any effort at all, just sinking into pure suffering and apathy. If you actually spend a lot of time listening to 95 (I do not actually recommend this in any way, it is a truly truly bad year, even in comparison to 94) there are a lot of passages where Jerry plays maybe 3% of his usual lines.

I attended 5 shows in 95, one show was consistently well played (05-21), the others were hit or miss, the worst actually being the last show 07-09, Garcia's absence during some of the tunes was chilling...
